Dyson is one of Britain’s most celebrated design companies. Originally founded by Sir James Dyson to make a more efficient vacuum cleaner,
it is now a global tech company with over 12000 employees and annual profits of more than £630 million.
Dyson are a problem - solution orientated company. This was the motivation behind the first bagless cleaner and as the company has grown, this is what has
driven them. This intense focus on design has turned the humble vacuum cleaner into a status symbol, proving beauty and innovation still go hand in hand.
Relentless invention not only defines Dyson but separates them from all others
A NEW IDEA
In 1978, a young James Dyson famously became dissatisfied with the diminishing power of his existing vacuum cleaner.
‘Why does it work like that?’ he asked, as he took it apart to investigate. He soon discovered the bag was becoming clogged with dust, causing suction to drop.
Around that time, he’d recently built an industrial Cyclone Tower for his factory that separated paint particles from the air using centrifugal force.
Could the same principle work in a vacuum cleaner? More than 5 years and 5127 prototypes later, he unveiled the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner.

1. Dyson Technology works differently.
Dyson believe there is always a better way. Their products are engineered to solve real problems
and it’s by re-thinking everyday products to remove unnecessary components, they create
revolutionary products that really can do the job much better than existing products on
The brief? To solve problems that others choose to ignore.
And when they’re ready to share what they’ve created, you’ll hear about it.
2. Unstoppable determination.
It took James Dyson 5127 porotypes to create his bagless cyclone technology… another company
may have given up after 3000 attempts. When you hit a brick wall, Dyson believe that’s the time to
double your efforts.
3. Their machines are designed to last.
Many products today are designed to wear out - meaning you need to go back and purchase another. This is not the Dyson way.
Their machines are designed to go on and on. This is why they have the confidence in their products, to offer a
no-quibble guarantee with every machine.
4. Their products are light in hand and heavily tested.
Dyson machines are designed with comfort in mind. They are lightweight and ergonomically – balanced.
Each prototype goes through thousands of hours of rigorous testing to ensure durability.
5. They are Allergy Experts – engineering machines to remove dust mites, bacteria, pollen and mould
Dyson is thought to be the only floorcare manufacturer in the world to have its own in-house microbiology
labs. They built their own facilities almost 18 years ago so they could really understand what was in
household dust. By understanding this, they can better enable their vacuum cleaners to deal with
the conditions they face in real homes.
Dyson have combined their microbiology expertise with engineering know-high to develop healthier and hygienic
technology. The air expelled back into the home by their machines, is actually cleaner than the air we breathe in. Their machines
can capture 99.97% particles as small as 0.3 microns. For context, the diameter of a human hair is around 50 microns.
Dyson spend a lot of time developing filters and seals to capture not only the dust you can see, but also the dust you can’t -
nasty things that trigger allergies like bacteria, pollen, dead skin cells and dust mite faeces.
6. Dyson make it easy to access the help you need.
All Dyson owners can access expert, lifelong machine support and advice. With downloadable manuals,
step-by-step guides and how to videos, you’ll find everything you need to know about their machines.
They even offer maintenance advice to keep their tools working at their best.
7. They are serious about Corporate Social Responsibly.
Dyson work hard to use energy and materials sparingly and ingeniously lessening their impact on the environment.
They make their production lines as efficient as possible. Fewer Mistakes means less waste.
Every Dyson Digital Motor is assembled by robots - working with micron accuracy and high speeds
and they use a hotrunner system to reduce resin waste. In order to further reduce time, materials and energy waste,
they have been working with their tooling suppliers to develop multi-cavity tools, allowing for the
production of multiple parts in one mould.
Almost all the materials in Dyson machines can be reused or recycled. They even refurbish and certify pre-owned machines,
offering them for sale at reduced prices.
8. Did you know they even have a Dyson Institute?
There is now a Dyson Institute that offers the brightest aspiring engineers an alternative to a university degree.
A programme not for the faint hearted – it is a rigorous engineering education combined with a proper job.
Dyson are committed to developing the engineering leaders of the future.
